I have a question...

Sun Jan 18, 2009, 10:22 AM
Does anyone else have family that doesn't care for your art? Better yet, a family member likes a certain style/subject of art, and you created some pieces in that style/subject hoping they'd like it, and they show near to no enthusiasm for it?

Yes.
That's the shortest possible answer. I got really bad..."reviews" from my family during my first writing attempts, up to the point where they took me to see a doctor, because they thought i was somehow sick.
And they don't really care that much for my modeling work either.
Get used to it. Besides, you are not making it for them, you are doing it for yourself. It took me years to understand that, and I don't really expect you to do it, but once it sinks in, you feel better.
You still might want them to like it, and appreciate it, but it's ok if they don't. You grew to new heights, became a person of your own, and don't depend on their approval or praise anymore.

Yeah. My dad once asked me if I was turining "goth" because of a song I wrote.

Honestly, one must ask themselves; do the ones who find a constructive way to release their emotions deserve to be considered, "crazy" or be stereotyped? Or is it those who bottle up their emotions until they snap?

Some people do not understand. It's okay though, I can gurantee at least one person loves your work, even if your family doesn't, and I know how much that can hurt.

Best wishes.

You're right. The only person I should focus on the art for is myself. I used to think they liked what I did, but now I realize that they just look at it and see how it looks. They don't notice the technique or the hours of work that's put into it.

It'll take a while, but I'll get over it. :)

Yeah, that's just something I'm going to have to live with. You're right; it always makes me feel good to know someone likes my work. Hopefully I'll get over it soon since it's never good to dwell on things like this.
